Mosaic Art made by Recycle Me Mosaics ~ A glimpse into the mosaic world of Katy Galbraith

Описание к видео Mosaic Art made by Recycle Me Mosaics ~ A glimpse into the mosaic world of Katy Galbraith

Mosaic art from recycled materials, this short film showcases the work of the Scottish artist, Katy Galbraith. It gives you a glimpse into her studio, located in Perthshire, and into the materials that she uses in her mosaics, mostly recycled and upcycled. Her inspirations in creating her mosaic art, for both interior and garden, come from her local landscape.

Working in my studio in my garden, with views over the hills, I am frequently inspired by this landscape which is reflected in my mosaics. Flowers in abundance feature in the majority of my exhibition pieces, as well as in private commissions. While many of my pieces are considered 'decorative art', I also enjoy making mosaics with a more practical purpose such as mirrors, table tops and garden items.

In producing my mosaics, I aim to be true to myself and my interest in recycling and sustainability by incorporating many recycled materials, including those representing me and my Crieff/Comrie/Strathearn/ Perthshire communities (ceramic wastage from potter friends, remnants from a local fused glass artist, wine bottle glass and broken car windows for example). The surface used for many of my mosaics originates from discarded kitchen units or roof slates, and i am often reusing frames too. Recycled materials stimulate many of my ideas in mosaic pieces that I have done, where i love the idea of a traditional patchwork, but in ceramic rather than fabric!

… Many years ago, my husband and I couldn't decide on what kind of garden table to get; he wanted a cheap picnic style table from the local DIY store, and I wanted a teak one with matching chairs. Then we agreed that a mosaic table would be good. The thing was that I had never made a mosaic, but a friend of mine taught it. So I went on a class and learnt how to cut tiles to shape and made a small piece. Then i made a 6' x 4' table top!

I was hooked!

Since then, I have progressed from being a hobbyist to exhibiting in both mixed media shows and mosaic-only shows, to having work in galleries, mostly in Scotland, and to taking on commissions. And an Etsy shop…
