After Yuan Shu is driven out from the capital, Yuan Shao beckons Cao Cao to begin the pursuit alongside him, but Cao Cao refuses, choosing to help Emperor Xian in his endeavors to recover from the corruption and discord that Dong Zhuo has sewn throughout the land. Feeling betrayed by Cao Cao, Yuan Shao chooses to launch a campaign against Cao Cao, leading up to the Battle of Guandu.
