How did World War II dramatically affected life at home. The Great Depression is ended overnight, as millions of men join the military, and factories spring to life to supply war goods. Industries shifted from consumer production to military production. Women, and other minority groups, filled the void left in industry by men who went off to war. African Americans fight in the war but also fight racism at home, thus creating the 'Double V' campaign. Mexican workers are brought in to help fill jobs in the Bracero worker program. Native Americans served in the military, often as 'Code-Talkers' helping pass messages across enemy lines. The country was bombarded with propaganda that demonized the enemy, encouraged enlistment, urged people to work in wartime industry, sold war bonds, and pushed behavioral changes like growing a war garden, canning, and conserving food & materials. Rationing of food, gasoline, rubber, nylon, and other materials became the norm as people were limited in what they could purchase. The country largely united behind the war effort, but it dramatically affected day to day life for all Americans.
