What is a ‘Gated Manual’ Gearbox?

The gated manual is called so because each gear slots into a milled gate, the chances of a mass-market new car ever being made with a gated manual are low, in fact, they have almost always been found in exotic cars.

If you've ever wondered 'what is a manual gearbox?' you'll likely have seen cars like the Ferrari F355 or later Audi R8.

The artistic design of the gated manual has made it something of an extra appeal as cars become increasingly filled with technology rather than fine metals and wood to separate them.

As ever with a gated manual, you'll find the shifts are slightly harder but much more satisfying, but today, in all but the very rarest of supercars, the gated manual is gone.
