Tower Defence - Part One

In this tutorial, I am demonstrating my approach to painting a little defence tower building in Krita in an isometric view.

In the next tutorial, we add props like carts, flags and wood structures to give this scene some life.

I show how to create a new document in Krita, set up the isometric grid and create a new paint layer. I keep each element's layer separate for easy editing if I need to make changes to each element.

First, we start drawing simple shapes like cubes and cylinders to block out the buildings and then we do a line drawing.

We create a paint layer below the line drawing to paint the tower structure. Once this is done we add a paint layer on top of everything and start to paint the final detail.

In the end, I create a group with all my layers. Then I duplicate this group and flatten it so that I can make adjustments to it. I keep duplicating this layer with each adjustment so that I can go back if I have taken something a little too far.
