In this short video, we talk about vaccine safety and monitoring through Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) reporting systems like VAERS (in the US), and how to interpret adverse events data including deaths.

We’re talking to a suspected anti-vaxxer/COVID denier’s 😅 concerns about VAERS deaths here.

✅ In the US, adverse events are recorded in VAERS (vaccine adverse event reporting system), and Canada's version of it is CAEFISS (Canadian adverse event following immunization surveillance system).

📝 It’s important to know that these are PASSIVE, SELF-REPORTING systems where anyone can record an event. If you get a concussion from hitting your head somewhere after getting the vaccine, that is reported.

📋 For most of these systems, all deaths in a given window after vaccination must be reported by healthcare providers. For example, if someone dies in a car accident a week after getting vaccinated, that has to be reported. All deaths must be reported, from ANY cause.

👁 The data is observational: the data can be inputted by anyone and is not subject to any analysis until later. Hence no causal relationships can be made just by looking at the raw data.

🚩If there are red flags, for example, an unusually high number of specific adverse events like deaths or blood clots, those are investigated to see whether the adverse event was caused by the vaccine.

❌ Importantly, association does NOT imply causation! For example, if someone gets hit by lightning after getting vaccinated, it does not mean the vaccine caused it.

⭕️ Until appropriate investigation and analyses are done, a causal link cannot be established between a vaccine and an adverse event.

So the deaths that you see in such reporting systems are NOT automatically linked to the vaccine.

✅ And so far, of the 5,718 deaths (as of June 28 , 2021) in the over 324 million doses of COVD-19 vaccines administered in the US, none of the deaths have been directly linked to the vaccines after investigation. Except for the deaths due to rare blood clots, which were only a handful, and which were investigated and reported.

✅ The system is transparent! By reporting all health-related data and making it publically available, there is a high degree of transparency here, nothing is being hidden.

✅ All vaccines are monitored like this through such reporting systems. It’s a part of routine post-marketing safety monitoring and surveillance.

So don’t get sucked in by misleading headlines and misinformation about adverse events that are reported in VAERS. This is just RAW, OBSERVATIONAL DATA. And until the data is analyzed, you cannot draw links between the adverse events and the vaccines.
