Start up ideas for Veterinary Graduates?

There is wide spectrum of entrepreneurship and start ups in Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Sector, which the veterinary graduates can opt for. I have discussed these ideas with the internees of Veterinary College, LUVAS, Hisar.

Private Sector:
• A large number of Indian and MNC Pharmaceutical Companies have entered into production of vety drugs and pharmaceuticals. They employ vet graduates for production, R&D, quality control and marketing of drugs and vaccine.
• Commercial dairy and poultry farms; breeding farms, hatchery, etc.
• Veterinary instruments/equipment industry.
• Biological products and vaccine product plants.
• Insurance companies, banks,
• Corporate bodies, e.g. NDDB, Milk Board, Milk Unions, etc.
• Feed processing industry.
Stud farms recruit vets to look after breeding, feeding and management of equines. Vets having interest and aptitude for equines are engaged by different race courses in metropolitan cities as consultant and for treatment of animals.
Diagnostic laboratories: Some of the reputed organizations particularly the hatcheries and poultry farm owners have established the disease investigation facilities (pathology, biochemistry, microbiology). with an aim to provide the quick diagnostic facilities. Such laboratories recruit vets to undertake disease diagnostic work.
Though the zoo and national parks get veterinary assistance through respective animal husbandry departments, but some of them recruit their own veterinary officers to provide health cover to their animals.
Slaughter Houses, particularly those located in big cities and managed by municipal corporations as well as large slaughter houses in private sector also recruit veterinary graduates to look after management and meat inspection work.

5. Self Employment. Those who can, succeed in Consultancy, Pet clinic, large animal practice, Equine clinic, Mobile Vet. Clinic, Entrepreneur in livestock farms, poultry farms, etc., Diagnostic labs, X-rays, ultrasound facility, Poultry Path Lab., Aquarium supplies etc.
Web consulting is exciting new area worth exploring (Telemedicine, animal health apps, tie up for surgeries and services, advisories on pet management, accessories, training etc.).
You can establish pathology Lab, Medical device optimization and fabrication unit, Milk processing unit, Meat processing unit and Value addition unit
After graduation, one can go for higher studies and do MVSc & PhD in Veterinary Sciences; MBA/ MHA; MSc (IT); M.Sc. (Digital imaging); Law; Ph.D. in Biomedical Engg; MSc (One health); On line certificate courses/ Continuing education
One can think of careers in Academics and Research in Veterinary colleges, Medical Research Institutes, Engineering Institutes, IISc., ISRO, BARC etc.
