In 1945, the island of Iwo Jima became a primary objective in American plans to bring about the end of World War Two. On the morning of February 19, 1945, Marines successfully invaded Iwo Jima. By February 23, the marines climbed up the rough terrain to the top and raised an American flag.

Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press caught the flag-raising in an iconic photograph which won a Pulitzer Prize. Sculptor Felix W. de Weldon, was so moved by the image that he constructed a life-size model of it. That model was cast in bronze, and President Eisenhower dedicated it as a memorial to the U.S. Marine Corps on November 10, 1954, which was the 179th anniversary celebration of the Corps.
