Discover why the park surrounding this Dutch castle was rebuilt due to World War II. It’s not what you would think!

Between October 3rd and 24th 1944 the allied forces bombed dikes and locks in mainly Westkapelle and Vlissingen to flood the peninsula Walcheren. The goal was to weaken the position of the German army by making their bunker positions and heavy artillery unusable. Due to this unfortunately also the Castle’s park was destroyed.

When Walcheren was dried out again a new park was built in 1947. Since then It has mainly consisted of oak, ash and maple trees. The history of Ter Hooge Castle in Middelburg goes back to the Middle Ages. During the Eighty Years' War between the Spanish Empire and the Dutch provinces the Castle’s interior was largely destroyed. After the liberation of Middelburg in 1574, the damage was repaired.

Between 1967 and 1969 the Castle was restored and since 1985 it is divided in four apartments.
