At approximately 1217 hours Avenel, Woodbridge, and Port Reading Fire Departments were dispatched to the East Jersey State Prison at 1275 Rahway Ave for a reported unknown type fire. As chief 5-3-1 arrived he was met with a guard at the main gate to get into the property. As crews made entry the first due engine stated they had heavy smoke on division 1 in the rotunda. As companies made it to division 2 they found fire in the right wing in cells 141 and 145. At first crews attempted to extinguish the fire with water cans but it was de unsuccessful, and an ancient three-quarter high-rise pack is connected to the standpipe as the fire was darkening down. It was noticeable that it was a large pile of debris boxes papers, and that this is going to take a while to extinguish an overhaul. This was particularly challenging due to the fact that the fire was a long ways away from the main entrance and getting personnel inside was a hassle. Companies were being sent to suppression as well as checking for extension in the catwalks between the units. At this time multiple inmates and DOC officers were being treated for injuries. Due to this being a maximum security prison the later arriving firefighters were not able to just walk into the facility. A staging area for firefighters had to be setup in the main entrance after going through security and crews were escorted in as they were needed. Inmates were being evacuated through the delta side. Any incoming companies were instructed to bring extra SCBA bottles, and rakes or trash hooks due to the extensive amount of overhaul that had to be done. It was suggested that corrections officials bring in tools as needed so crews did not have to go through the security checkpoints. A secondary staging area was setup past the checkpoint, and crews were filtered in as guys needed relief. Due to this being a complex incident and many patients EMS 1 and EM 1 were on scene to coordinate operations as well. Due to guys getting tired out from bringing equipment up, and working Colonia Engine 12-1, Fords Engine 7-1, and Iselin Engine 9-2 were also requested to the scene. As companies continue knocking down fire and checking for extensions. It was deemed that there was no extension beyond the cells of origin. Corrections officers began ventilation. At this point all hands were continuing to work to continue extinguishment and overhauling, and the fire was not yet under control. Once the fire was under control, the correctional officers needed all the overhauled debris back in the cell. crews still had heat signatures and smoldering debris. By this point all interior crews were extremely burnt out and gassed and had to go to rehab.
