Laparoscopic surgery for Parastomal hernia: Patient review

Para stomal hernia are the hernia developed at the site of a stoma (colostomy or ileostomy), which is generally done as a part of colon cancer surgery or surgery for ulcerative colitis.
As any other hernia this can be treated by either open or laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery certainly have some advantages whenever it is possible. Para stomal hernia are also a bit notorious for having high recurrence rates, so all attempts should be done to do a good repair at the first surgery itself.
In this case the patient had a colon cancer surgery in 2015 and is having a permanent descending colostomy. He had developed a huge parastomal hernia with large amount of intestines coming out from the defect and collecting below the skin. You can see the bulge in one pic in the video. This was causing significant discomfort to the patient leading to restricted mobility.
Happy to say that surgery has improved the mobility and quality of life of this elderly gentleman.
Laparoscopic surgery is the best treatment option for most of the hernia patients. Decision for type of surgery needs to taken based on type of hernia, size and patients age and medical condition.
