Jackson House, a discrete and sympathetic extension to the ground floor of a Victorian terraced house, sits nestled within a street in Leytonstone. The project is simultaneously quiet and reserved through its use of materials yet highly detailed in their application. Archive for Space explored the local area drawing inspiration from Wanstead Temple and Leyton Townhall to inform a rigorous facade at a residential scale.

The clients, a growing family, required a space that was economic and robust in its materiality allowing Archive for Space to explore a palette of hardwearing off-the-shelf materials that also have an innate richness. As with Archive for Space’s other works the project explores the assembly and treatment of raw materials and how they can be simply manipulated to provide a feeling altogether unexpected. The blockwork, for example, is seen here as a finished surface which is far from its intended use. With care in its construction and a final coat of paint the blockwork provides a warm, textured backdrop to the family's everyday life.

The base of the project employs hard and robust materials; blockwork and terracotta tiles. To juxtapose this Archive for Space worked with a lighter, warmer palette of douglas fir and plywood for the ceiling. The rich tones of the ceiling marry with the floor and kitchen to provide an overall feeling of warmth, calm and comfort. The douglas fir extends to the facade where three bays have been developed with a tiled pediment that nods to the architecture of Wanstead Temple.
