Описание к видео Black Galls On Corn Identifiying And Managing This Common Plant Disease

The video shows someone holding a corn cob that looks pretty messed up, with big, lumpy, blackish growths coming out of it. This isn't some strange alien thing; it's actually a common corn disease called corn smut.
So, what is it? It's basically a fungus that infects corn plants.Think of it like a wild mushroom, but instead of growing out of the ground, it grows right on the corn plant itself. The black, powdery stuff you see is a bunch of spores, which are like the "seeds" of the fungus, ready to spread. Why does it happen? Well, the spores of this fungus are everywhere in the soil and can also travel through the air. If a corn plant gets a little wound, say from a hailstone, an insect, or even just during cultivation, those spores can sneak in and start growing. It tends to be more common in warm, humid weather.
The name, as I mentioned, is corn smut. It's not a very appealing name, but it accurately describes the sooty, black appearance of the mature galls.
As for how to deal with it, there's no real "cure" once the plant is infected. The best approach is prevention. You can try planting corn varieties that are more resistant to smut. Good field hygiene, like removing and destroying infected plants (before the galls burst and spread more spores), can also help reduce the amount of fungus in your soil for future crops. Luckily, while it might make some of your cobs look ugly, corn smut usually doesn't wipe out an entire cornfield.
