Using TWO tarps to make ONE shelter

Combining two tarps to make one shelter seems like a weird idea, but really, it is not. If you have one or two tarps that you use when go solo, the combination of both these tarps may be great if you have an occasional outing with the family, or friends. It can also be a way to upgrade your normal open setup, nice for when the weather is good, to a more protective shelter. And these pitches almost all benefit from having a wind wall second tarp in front of it. Noteworthy (but nothing to do with double tarp pitching) is that on my first winter trip in really deep snow I took two tarps: a small ultralight one and a 10* 10 foot one. I used the small one as ground sheet and the big one as roof, but one night, when the ground situation was seriously sketchy, I used the big one as floor. On a later trip I had gained much more confidence and left the big tarp at home. Winter camping in snow is easier once you get the hang of it.    • Does tarp camping work in winter? Wee...
