Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, consisting primarily of a 120.82-square-kilometre lake and ambient marshes, is situated about 64 km to the west of Ahmedabad near Sanand Village, in the Gujarat state of India.


The best time to visit Nalsarovar is in winter between November & February. However, migratory birds start arriving in October and stay until April but their population reaches its peak in mid-winter. There is also an information center in the sanctuary which gives details of migratory birds and Nalsarovar.

Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary is a spectacular natural lake with shallow waters and muddy lagoons, dotted by 360 islets. It offers an ideal wintering ground for thousands of migratory birds. These birds travel tiring lengths from Central Asia, Europe and Siberia to escape from severe cold of harsh winter there.


Nalsarovar wetland, in Gujarat, is deemed as the biggest wetland bird sanctuary in the state. As many as 200 different species of birds can be discerned and enjoyed. The birds migrate from as far as Siberia,Oman,UAE etc. Apart from these, typical species like pelicans,ducks,herons and storks can be found easily.


About the location: This 121-sq-km sanctuary, 60km southwest of Ahmedabad, protects Nalsarovar Lake, iron-flat plains and wetlands. This is the largest wetland sanctuary in the state and one of the biggest in the country as well.


Nalsarovar is within Driving distance of Ahmedabad (64 Kms - 1.50 hours).
