We make our way back to northern Indiana to make up for our losses. Every Labor Day Weekend, the Hesston Steam Museum hosts their annual Steam & Power Show, featuring steam tractors, a sawmill demonstration, and train rides on three different railroads with four different gauges. With the 3-foot / 2-foot dual gauge railroad featuring 2.5 miles of track, a roughly 6% grade, and a fairly impressive collection of steam locomotives.

The last time we visited, we only saw one of the three operable locomotives at Hesston, so we came back wanting the other two, and we were very lucky. The museum ran two trains; with both of the locomotives we wanted:

United Fruit Company #2 was built in 1911 by the H.K. Porter Company as a 3-foot narrow gauge 17.5 ton 2-6-0 "Mogul" type locomotive for the United Fruit Company's banana plantation in Guatemala (hence why she is wearing Guatemalan flags). She would serve alongside several other locomotives at the plantation until she was retired in 1950. She was saved from scrap in 1961 by a man named Elliott Donnelley and (after a brief time at the Black Hills Central Railroad) was sent to the CB&Q shops in Clyde Illinois for running gear repairs. She would operate at the Hesston Steam Museum from 1969 to 1985 under the Flying Dutchman Railroad name. In 1985, the engine house caught fire and severely damaged a lot of equipment, including the #2. As a result, she was due for an extensive overhaul. The overhaul was completed in 2019 (complete with a new boiler), and she has been operating at Hesston ever since.

New Mexico Lumber Company #7 was built in 1929 by the Lima Locomotive Works as a 3-foot narrow gauge Class C Shay type locomotive for NML and was the last narrow-gauge Shay ever built. However, she would only operate on the NML for about a month before being sent to one of Lima's distributers in Seattle in 1931. Ten years later, she was purchased by the Oregon Lumber Company and operated there until she was retired in 1960 (during her tenure at OLC, she would receive her Rushton style stack and later be converted from wood to oil firing). She was purchased by Elliott Donnelley and would operate on the Black Hills Central Railroad until 1970 when she was sent to Hesston for an extensive overhaul. She would emerge from the shop in 1975 and would operate until the 1985 engine house fire would badly damage her. After yet another overhaul, she would emerge again in 2006, and has been running at the Hesston Steam Museum ever since.
