Hey everyone, it's Daniel here from Glass.com and today we're going to be talking about sunroof leaks. Sunroofs are a great add-on option for a lot of vehicles but they can cause unwanted issues like moisture leaks inside your car which can cause mold, mildew and other problems. So let's take a look at how you can spot moisture leaks from your sunroof and where they're found inside your car.

So the first place where you'll probably spot moisture issues is where the headliner meets the sunroof. And although it's further away from your sunroof, you might even see water down here by your firewall where it can build up in pools.

So why does your sunroof leak? Well it's actually built to leak by design. And what I mean by that is that there's this gasket that runs around the glass, but it's not totally sealed shut. So when it rains, the water leaks down through this gasket into the channel below.

So your sunroof's glass slides in a track right here and just beyond this track is a channel where the water is designed to drain into. What often happens is these sunroofs, these tracks and these channels are left uncleaned and debris can build up and clog the drain holes. So how do you check to see if these drain holes are clogged and how do you clean them?

The first thing you'll want to do is go ahead and clean out this area. Once you have this area cleaned up now you can test to see if the drain tube is draining. You'll want to take a bottle of water and slowly pour a small amount of water down in this corner. So we're pouring water into the front right corner of the sunroof right now and there's typically a drain hole located in each of the four corners of the sunroof. This front right drain hole should drain to the front right corner of the car.

If the water pools up and doesn't drain, that likely means that the top of this drain tube is clogged. If it does drain in the top, but you don't any water draining out below, that means it's leaking somewhere. If water isn't draining from the sunroof channel, or it's draining slowly, it's quite possible you have a clogged sunroof drain line. Now, Glass.com always recommends that you have your car serviced professionally but what a lot of people do is try to snake their drain line with either a piece of weedeater string or something similar. Or you can use an air hose to blow the tubing out. But whatever you do, be gentle because this is just plastic tubing and it can rupture easily. Now we'll retest again with our bottle of water to make sure that the water is draining from the sunroof channel.

So if you've tried pouring water into the channel and it's draining up here, but it's not draining out below your vehicle to the exterior, your drain line is probably disconnected. If you have water stains around your headliner, the drain line is probably disconnected from the port where it enters into the channel. If your drain tube is disconnected down below where it exits the firewall, then you'll probably have water pooling around the area of the footwell.
