In product search, users traditionally adapt to the search system: They need to use keywords and concepts that the system can process. However, this form of interaction is far from intuitive for users with low technical knowledge or restricted domain knowledge.

This talk will introduce methods for utilizing user feedback during the development of IR systems to create intuitive interactions. We will also talk about research trends in interactive information retrieval, such as explainable IR and conversational search, and how to leverage their paradigms for designing user-friendly product search systems.

— Bio: Andrea is a research assistant in the computer science department at GESIS - Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne (Germany) and a doctoral student with Prof. Norbert Fuhr at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany). Her research fields are interactive information retrieval and explainable AI, combining human behaviour and perception with technology to serve the user. She studied Creative Technology (BA) and Interaction Technology (MA) at the University of Twente (Netherlands). Personally fascinated by human behavior, especially the way people interact with each other. She loves to analyze them end derive system requirements and designs for human-centered technology.
