PAINT A SMALL WESTERN LANDSCAPE

Watch western artist Jason Tako paint a small western landscape in oil paint on a 10x12 oil-primed linen panel. This painting was based on a plein air painting Jason did just west of Billings Montana during the summer. The plein air study was used for accurate colors and values while several photographs were used for details and compositional ideas. The foreground of the actual scene was covered with trees, but Jason used another photograph of the area to open the foreground and lead the eye to the butte. Watch how he recomposes elements from both photos to come up with a pleasing composition.
