History of this temple;

Kombai Thirumalairayaperumal Temple:  There may be some dog lovers in this group.  They may be familiar with one of the most famous Indian dog breeds, called Kombai.  It is almost extinct now.  They are even better than Rajapalayam or Chippiparai breed.  The temple I am going to write about, is situated around 6 Kms from Kombai.  It is the Thirumalairayaperumal Temple or popularly known as Kombai Perumal temple.

The village is situated on the foothills of Western Ghats and the place is called Ramakal Malai.  There are several hamlets spread over the hill.  Once there lived a cow herd who used to milk his cows and sell the milk in the nearby Kombai and other villages.  It so happened, that in one of part of his route, he used to get hit by the roots of a tree and the milk used to get spilled.  This was happening for a few days at the same spot.  One day, the milk man brought an axe with him and cut the root where he used to get tripped.  Suddenly, blood started spurting out.

The milk man got frightened and reported the matter to the local Zamindar.  The Lord came in the dream of the Zamindar and told him that it was He who was responsible for the episode and advised him to construct a temple on that spot of the Ramakal Hill.  The workforce went into action and found a Swayambu Murthy at that spot and as advised, constructed the temple on that spot with the Ramakal Hill as background.  Even today, people claim that the portion of the Hill where these things happened, looks like the face of a man in peace and the spot where the blood spurted out, like the Thiruman ( the namam ) of Perumal.   There is also a belief that the Perumal is growing in size every year. The last Kumbabishekam had happened in Oct 2015.

The presiding deity is Thirumalairayaperumal or Aranganathar.  Utsavar is Sri Ranganathar with Sridevi and Bhoodevi.   The Lord is in reclining position with his head on the South, with hands stretched towards North and showing His Lotus Face towards the east, the direction in which Kombai is situated. In the prakaram, there are shrines for Anjaneya, Vinayakar ( Thumbikai Azhwar) and Navagraham.  While I have seen temples with Thumbikai Azhwar, Navagrahms are rarely seen in Vishnu Temples.
