This video details the final 12 minutes and hours of the infamous sinking and brutal aftermath of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and the fate of its crew members, up to 150 of whom were estimated to have been attacked and killed in a tragedy that went on to be known as the most devastating shark attacks in recorded history.
On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb resulted in unprecedented destruction and a pivotal shift in the course of World War II. But it was just days earlier, on July 28, to be precise, that the USS Indianapolis departed Guam without the safeguard of an escort, (most likely to stay low key on what was a perilous journey to meet the battleship USS Idaho in the Leyte Gulf, Philippines, as they readied for the impending invasion of Japan.
The day began peacefully, with the Indianapolis making steady progress through the Pacific, swells gently rocking the ship. Yet, shortly after midnight, tragedy struck. A Japanese torpedo struck the Indianapolis in the starboard bow, causing a huge explosion, that blew off about 65 feet of the ship's front, and ignited a large fuel tank, resulting in a massive fire that lit up the night sky.
The disaster didn't stop there. A second torpedo hit the middle of the ship, causing her even further damage and causing fuel tanks and ammunition stores to explode one after another, tearing the ship apart.
And as if it were a scene straight out of a movie, The Indianapolis, a once a strong and proud ship, was now split in half in just 12 minutes, leaving 1196 survivors stranded in open water.
As the sun broke the horizon on July 30, the survivors found themselves adrift in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Life rafts were scarce, pushing survivors to search for the deceased floating in the water, snatching their lifejackets to help those without. They began forming groups of varying sizes in the open water in a desperate attempt to maintain some semblance of order and fend off exposure, thirst, and the encroaching threat of sharks.
