This is an American Flyer GP7/9 with can motors and electronics from the late 1980's early 1990's. This is when Lionel started switching over to can motors and electronic reverse units.

The electronics had intermittent reverse so I replaced it with a American Models reverse unit but I had to install it on its side as it is to wide to fit the narrow shell.

Also with these older engines the nylon worm gears on the shaft assembly are know to crack so I replaced it with new gears.

As you can see the engine runs great and has a fantastic pulling power.
