There’s a quiet kind of magic to Cayman Brac — the kind that doesn’t shout for attention, yet lingers in the salt air. Cayman Brac is the eastern most island in the Caymans Islands.
It is uncrowded and relaxed, and more about ditching the ordinary, and getting lost in a unique adventure. One day, weightless in a world of fish, and huge coral canyons; the next, hanging by fingertips on a shadowed cliff. It's a simple rhythm: dive in the morning, climb in the afternoon, relax in the evening.
Just a short boat ride offshore, there are a vast number of exciting dives.The water is so blue here that it seems like descending into a cathedral. Light filters down, illuminating coral canyons that are patrolled by barracuda, shy reef sharks, turtles, and the occasional spotted eagle ray that sweeps past like a ghost in flight. There are wall dives here too, like — Wilderness Wall, and East Chute, but one of the biggest attractions is the haunting silhouette of the 330 foot Captain Keith Tibbetts, a Russian frigate turned artificial reef in 1996. This is a famous Caribbean wreck dive that you don't want to miss. It is at about 80 feet depth, and lies almost on its side strewn across the sandy bottom.
Above the waves, another challenge awaits. Climbing the rock face of the bluff with Rock Iguana ltd. The bluff rises at the eastern end of the island, a jagged ribbon of limestone sculpted by time and weather. It’s the only vertical rock-climbing face in the Caymans — and one of the rarest in the Caribbean. Punishing routes wind up its face to interesting caves, and the start of a natural rock climbing face. The rock is sharp, weathered, and perfect for gripping, with rewaqrding sea views. At the top, the sea breeze carries the tang of salt and the ocean seems endless. And somewhere in the overlap — where time slows on the rock face and your breath slows beneath the waves — the spirit of the island reveals itself.
