The Soviet Union was formed on December 30th, 1922, as a federation of socialist republics. It was governed by a single party, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), led by General Secretary Joseph Stalin. During its existence, the Soviet Union was one of the world's superpowers, and was one of the two main contenders of the free world during the Cold War.

The 15 republics that made up the Soviet Union were divided into three groups: the Soviet national republics, the autonomous republics, and the autonomous regions. The Soviet national republics were considered the main political units and had more autonomy than the others. Among them, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus were the most important economically and demographically.

The Soviet Union faced several economic and political problems during its existence, including lack of political freedom, economic inequality, and a culture of fear and repression. From the 1980s, these problems intensified, and in 1991, the country dissolved peacefully, with the republics becoming independent countries.
