The giraffe is the tallest land animal on Earth, easily recognized by its long neck, spotted coat, and graceful movement. Native to the savannas and open woodlands of Africa, giraffes use their long necks to reach the leaves of tall trees, especially their favorite food—acacia leaves.

Their unique coat patterns, made up of brown patches separated by lighter lines, are like fingerprints—no two giraffes look the same. Giraffes have long legs, a short body, and a small pair of horn-like structures on their heads called ossicones.

Despite their size, giraffes are gentle and social animals, often seen in groups called towers. They have excellent eyesight and can spot predators like lions from far away. Interestingly, giraffes only sleep for a few minutes at a time while standing.

Their tongue is about 18–20 inches long and is dark-colored to protect it from sunburn while feeding. A giraffe’s heart can weigh up to 25 pounds, strong enough to pump blood all the way up to its head.
