"Malambo" is a vibrant work featuring virtuosistic writing for the flute, blending dramatic, colorful, and rhythmically driving elements with the melodic influences of Latin American folk music. The piece portrays a celebration in a village square on the Argentine Pampas, where the flutist, representing the main protagonist, wrestles with the decision to join the festivity or remain isolated. The sound of church bells evokes memories, leading the flutist to sing alone, accompanied only by distant sounds of dancers, birds, and insects.
As the flutist joins in a dance inspired by the Malambo of South American gauchos, the music alternates between 12/16 and 7/16 meters, reflecting an abstracted memory of these dance. The bells ring again, prompting the flute to perform an expressive solo that crescendos into an emotional climax before fading into darkness. The dance resumes, uninterrupted, building to a joyous, life-affirming conclusion.
The flute version of Malambo was premiered in 2022 by the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, (Leonard Slatkin cond, Demarre McGill flute). This flute-piano version was later premiered by April Clayton in 2024 at the National Flute Association Convention in San Antonio, TX. Originally written for bassoon, it premiered in 2016 at the Talis Music Festival in Switzerland.
