Nintendo actually struggled with developing a sequel to the original SMB from its massive success.

Their first concept, what is now known as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, was too similar to the original game & felt it was too challenging. Finally, delivering upon the inspiration of the original concept & creating a second official sequel, Nintendo cosmetically modified a prototype video game - 𝙔𝙪𝙢𝙚 𝙆𝙤̄𝙟𝙤̄: 𝘿𝙤𝙠𝙞 𝘿𝙤𝙠𝙞 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘 - to become the international release of Super Mario Bros. 2!
