Former South Korean intelligence chief Cho Tae-yong was arrested on Wednesday (November 12, local time) in connection with last year’s declaration of martial law, which led to the impeachment and removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Cho, who was still serving as head of South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) when Yoon declared martial law in December 2024, has been charged with negligence of duty.

According to AFP (Wednesday, November 12, 2025), the arrest followed a request by South Korea’s special prosecutors, who sought a warrant accusing Cho of dereliction of duty as intelligence chief and of posing a risk of evidence destruction, among other charges.
