Did you know your spine is designed to move in 6 directions?

In modern life, we tend to sit for long periods and mostly move our spines in forward bending and back bending, while often neglecting side bending and rotation. Over time, this limited movement can contribute to stiffness, reduced mobility, and postural discomfort.

In this video, my mum and I demonstrate the 6 directions of spinal movement to build awareness of how the spine is meant to move:

Forward bend (flexion)

Backbend (extension)

Side bend left & right (lateral flexion)

Rotation left & right

These movements support a mobile, strong, and resilient spine, and help improve body awareness — one of the key benefits of yoga.

💡 This is a demonstration, not a full routine.
The movements do not need to be done all in one go and can be explored slowly and gently over time. They can also be done seated or standing, depending on what feels comfortable for you.

Yoga is especially helpful for developing spinal awareness, encouraging balanced movement in all directions rather than repeating the same patterns every day.

This kind of spinal movement can help:

Improve spinal mobility

Reduce stiffness in the back, neck, and shoulders

Support healthier posture

Encourage freer, more comfortable movement
