A sliding gearbox, also known as a manual sliding transmission or sliding-mesh gearbox, is a type of manual transmission used in some older vehicles and specialized applications. It operates on the principle of sliding gears to engage and disengage different gear ratios for varying vehicle speeds.

In a sliding gearbox, there are multiple gear sets, typically arranged in parallel, each with different gear ratios. The gears are mounted on separate shafts, and their engagement is controlled by a shift lever or a similar mechanism. The gears have teeth that are cut in a helical or straight pattern.

To shift gears in a sliding gearbox, the driver must disengage the current gear by pushing in the clutch, which temporarily disconnects the engine's power from the transmission. Then, the shift lever is moved to select the desired gear ratio by sliding the corresponding gears into engagement. Finally, the driver releases the clutch to reestablish the power flow and propel the vehicle at the chosen gear ratio.

The main characteristic of a sliding gearbox is that it requires precise timing and coordination from the driver to match the engine speed with the vehicle speed during gear changes. Improper shifting can result in grinding gears, which can damage the transmission components.

Sliding gearboxes have largely been replaced by synchronized transmissions, also known as synchromesh transmissions, in modern vehicles. Synchromesh transmissions use synchronizer mechanisms that match the rotational speeds of the gears before engagement, allowing for smoother and easier shifting. However, sliding gearboxes are still used in some specialized applications, such as in heavy-duty trucks or off-road vehicles, where their robustness and simplicity are advantageous.
