LEEDS PARISH #29: DRIGHLINGTON

Drighlington is a large village in the South of the City of Leeds metropolitan district. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it lies only 4 miles Southeast of Bradford.

Spelt differently to how it sounds, the h is silent and the name is often further shortened by the locals to Drig

The earliest mention of Drighlington is to be found in the Domesday Book, in the forms “Dreslintone” and “Dreslingtone”. In 1202 it was known as “Drichtlington”

The name comes from Old English. The Dryhtlingas were a group descended from or otherwise associated with someone called Dryhtla. This then is literally “the settlement of the descendants of Dryhtla”

The settlement is based around two distinct areas – one which centres on a crossroads where the A58 meets the B6135. The other is a large common.

Now, a little extra mini disclaimer is required here because the name of that common can be said a few different ways – I’ve heard “Ad-walton”, “Ad-wal-ton” and the one I’m going with, “Adul-ton”.

That common was the site of a battle, and there are no shortage of references to that around here, including on the village sign which you’ll have seen in this video’s thumbnail
