As beautiful as this island country is, it has a brutal and painful history. A major part of that history involves indentured Indian labourers, who later helped build this nation. After learning about this, we knew we had to dig deeper — so we decided to spend an entire day in the capital city of Mauritius, Port Louis.

We started our day with SSR Botanical Garden, it is 300 years old and one of the oldest in the world. Giant Lily Pods are the most famous and a must see.
Time: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM
Entry Fees: MUR 300 | Free Entry for Children Under 5 Years

Then we went to L'Aventure du Sucre, it's a Sugar museum. Sugar plays a very important in the history of Mauritius and till date it is the back bone of its economy. In this museum you get to understand the entire history how sugar played an important part in colonisation by 3 different countries.
Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Closed on Sunday)
Entry Fees: MUR 800

After that we came to Caudan Waterfront Park, which is the first shopping complex in the country, it's very young and vibrant. From museum to food to shopping to cafes to entertainment to art galleries. It has everything. It's very modern and chic.
Time: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

In this area you can find many museums like Blue Penny Museum, Slavery Museum, Apravasi Ghat, Postal museum and more. Visiting all wasn't possible so we decided to visit Blue Penny Museum which has world first and rarest Red & Blue postal stamps and Apravasi Ghat which is a must must visit. If you have very limited time and want to visit only one museum then it definitely should be Apravasi Ghat, it was an Immigration depot for Indian Identured Labourers. Here you can understand the entire history of how Britishers exploited Indian Laborers and it doesn't have any entry fees. Do not miss Apravasi Ghat.
Time: Both museums closes at 4 PM

Our last spot was Citadel or Fort Adelaide which was built by britishers to keep an eye on the city and port. Now it is famous for a beautiful view of the city.
Time: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
