wood Apple ( Diul )

The scientific name Limonia acidissima belongs to the genus Rutaceae. Divul has been born in Sri Lanka and India. At present, it can be seen in southern China, Southeast Asian countries and Pakistan.

This plant is a deciduous tree up to 9 meters tall. It has a circular canopy. There are compound leaves. There are about 5-7 leaflets in one sheet. A leaf is about 25 cm long. The flowers are white.

The size of a fruit is about 5-9 cm in diameter. They consist of sour or sweet taste. The outside has a hard shell and the inside contains an edible brown pulp and small white seeds. The brown part is delicious...

This plant can be grown even under very harsh dry climate conditions. Therefore, the areas belonging to the dry and intermediate zone of Sri Lanka are more suitable for Diwali.

Dibul can be grown at a height of 450 meters from sea level. If we consider the soil, it can be grown in any soil. That is, this plant grows well in soils with poor drainage and high salinity.
This plant is a slow growing tree. A plant made from seeds takes about 15 years to bear fruit. But grafted plants yield in a short period of time. Divul kiri is made by mixing ripe divul pulp with coconut milk and is very popular among Sri Lankans and Indians. Apart from this, various kinds of jams, drinks, chutneys etc. are made from this fruit.

Many parts of the Dibul tree are widely used in Sinhala Ayurvedic medicine.
