Описание к видео Scroll of Ryukyuan Procession to Edo (1710)

This video I've made in 2005 shows the scroll of Ryukyuan procession (1710) to Edo. accompanied by Satsuma samurai.

It is an Edo-nobori 江戸上り (going up to Edo), i.e. a processions of Ryūkyūan envoys to Edo. These Edo-nobori took place from 1634 until 1850.

Overview:
no.: 7a and 7b
year: 1710
kind: congratulatory mission (keiga) for new shogun Shōgun Ienobu
chief-envoy: Misato Ōji Chōtei
vice-envoy: Yoza Uēkata Ankō
members: 168

In 1710 Misato Ōji Chōtei and Yoza Uēkata Ankō were sent as congratulatory envoys for the new Shōgun Ienobu. At the same time Tomigusuku Ōji Chōkyō and Tomori Uēkata Seifu were dispatched as gratitude envoys for the enthronement of King Shō Eki. The mission comprised of one- one hundred sixty-eight in total. After having left Kagoshima together with the Satsuman party on 08/26, the procession reached Ōsaka on 10/16, and Fushimi on 10/20. On 10/25 they left for the Bay of Edo, which they reached on 1710/11/11.

The Police Captains of Misato Ōji were Kadekari Pēchin, Tamagusu-ku Pēchin Chōkun (the founder of kumiodori), and Wakugawa Pēchin. The Police Captain of Tomimori Uēkata was Maegawa Satonushi.

The Police Captains of Tomigusuku Ōji were Chinen Satonushi Pēchin, Kyan Chikudun Pēchin, and Kuba Chikudun Pēchin.

The Police Captain of Yoza Uēkata was Nakabaru Chikudun Pēchin.

Furthermore, the official genealogies note Majikina Chikudun Pēchin Shūshin of the Bu-clan as a Police Captain for 1710, whom is not found in the other sources.

During this mission, among the gifts presented to the Shōgun were two swords.

Satsuma retainer Sagara Gondayū with his unit, which was equipped with three different kinds of weapons, was assigned as retinue to the Ryūkyūans. The total number of men of the Satsuma legation in 1710 amounted to over 4000 men, a large number of which were armed Samurai. In comparison to this posse, the different kinds of weapons carried by Ryūkyūans during each and any of the missions were actually completely negligible.
