4th International Nursi Studies Conference was held in Kolkata on 12-13 February 2015 in association with Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture (IFSC) of Turkey and Arabic Department of Aliah University.

The life, works, spiritual thoughts and contribution of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, the most influential Muslim scholar in modern Turkey, and his great works `Risale-i Nur’, a a contemporary interpretation of Quran, were discussed at the conference.

The Conference also saw presentations on the works and life of Nursi. Apart from Turkey, participating scholars and educationalists came from Jordan, Malaysia, England and Bangladesh. Professors, scholars and students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi; Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi; Osmania University of Hyderabad; Aligarh Muslim University of Aligarh, Biswabharaty of Birbhum and Jammu Kashmir University participated in this conference.

Said Nursi (1876-1960) was the most influential figure in twentieth century Muslim scholarship. He was the founder of what is arguably Turkey’s most important popular religious grouping, the Nur Community, which sought–and seeks–to foster Islamic sensibilities through a system of education based on Nursi’s ideas. But for many of his disciples, who number now in their millions, Said Nursi represents a great deal more than just a religious instructor. As they see it, he was also the prophesied “”renewer,”” the “”mujaddid,”” who–according to Muslim tradition–would appear at the beginning of each century to revive Islam and reinterpret the tenets of the Qur’an according to the needs of the day. In so many ways his life and what he stood for echo the increasingly dangerous polarization in Turkey between Islamic traditionalism and the secularism. His magnum opus 6,000 pages `Risale-i-Nur’ collection is known as a contemporary interpretation of Quran. Various short verses expounded in the `Risale-i-Nur’ are those concerning with the truths of belief, such as the divine names, attributes and divine activity in the universe.
