Claymation became part of the pop culture zeitgeist and was seen nearly everywhere in the mid-80's. Will Vinton, was the creative genius behind using this new technique of molding clay as the medium for animating scenery and characters. Domino's "The Noid" and the infamous California Raisins were very popular mascots for their brands and even spawned their own cartoons, shows and movies. Will Vinton's "Claymation Christmas" is a favorite of mine to watch at the holidays, so when I was about 10 years old, I came across the film "The Adventures of Mark Twain" on VHS at the library; I had to check it out!

I was amazed by the animation, as always, but there was a scene that actually terrified me to my very soul - "The Mysterious Stranger" - to this day the scene gives me the creeps, but also reaffirms my own faith and beliefs. Whether you view this as religious or not, I'm sure you'll agree that it's very disturbing. The scene is based on Mark Twain's short story about this mysterious character, who reveals himself as "Satan" - who doesn't understand the meaning of "wrong" so therefore feels he can only do "right" - even if that means total destruction and being a taker of life. Mark Twain is a genius in his own right and this short story is definitely worth checking out. By the way, I learned through genealogy that I am related to Mr. Twain!!

"The Adventures of Mark Twain" (released in the UK as "Comet Quest") is a 1985 American stop motion claymation fantasy film directed by Will Vinton. It received a limited theatrical release in May 1985. It was released on DVD in 2006. The film features a series of vignettes extracted from several of Mark Twain's works, built around a plot that features Twain's attempts to keep his "appointment" with Halley's Comet. Twain and three children, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher, travel on an airship between various adventures.

A scene from "The Chronicle of Young Satan" was adapted in the 1985 claymation film "The Adventures of Mark Twain", wherein Satan invites Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Becky Thatcher to his company, displaying his powers to manifest things at will. He invites them to construct small clay people, which he brings to life and places in a small kingdom. Satan expresses curiosity and eventually spite toward their creations when the clay people display infighting and inflict cruelty on one another. He causes plagues and natural disasters to destroy the small community, buries the ruins with an earthquake, and causes wild vegetation to engulf the spot where the clay people once lived, demonstrating the futility and insignificance of mankind—much to the horror of the children, with Huck Finn uttering "You murdered them!" Satan advises them that "people are of no value" and that more could be made "if we need them".

Satan appears playful and friendly when he constructs the small kingdom, slowly revealing himself as cruel and hateful as he destroys it (although he claims he "can do no wrong" since he does not understand the word's meaning). He appears as a robed, headless figure with a mask where his head would be. As his true nature is revealed, the mask gradually changes from a pleasant appearance to a demonic visage and finally a grinning skull.
