Château de Pierrefonds. Picardy. France

The Château de Pierrefonds is a great example of mediaeval defensive military architecture. The first fortress on this site was built in the 12th century. The owner of the site was Duke of Orlean, who received it from his brother, King Charles VI (1368–1422). The Duke rebuilt and renovated the castle between 1393 and 1407. In 1617 it was besieged and taken by Richelieu's troops who also ordered it to be demolished. However, the task has not been done and it remained in ruins couple of centuries. In 1810 Napoleon I bought the Château. Later on in the 19th century the castle was restored and declared as a monument of national significance in France.
