miles morkri‘s piece, “yarrow,” is based on the flower genus Achillea, named after the Greek mythological hero, Achilles.

When Achilles was a baby, his mother, the goddess Thetis, held him by the heel and dipped him in the waters of the river Styx. In doing so, he was granted his famed near-invincibility. Achilles was completely invulnerable with the exception of his heel where his mother held him.

During the Trojan wars, Achilles was known far and wide as an undefeated champion of battle. Eventually, during the siege of Troy – his brother, Paris, loosed an arrow on an unsuspecting Achilles from high above in the castle ramparts, hitting him in the heel and ultimately leading to his death.

This piece explores the moment when someone who's convinced that they’re invincible discovers how vulnerable they really are. It is about acceptance over what you can't control, and not taking anything in life for granted.
