Spy Rock is one of the most amazing moderate hikes in George Washington National Forest's Pedlar District located just feet from the Appalachian Trail south of The Priest Wilderness. A three-mile out-and-back hike is accessible from a parking lot trailhead close to the Montebello State Fish Hatchery.

The ascent to Spy Rock is along a steep forest road that leads to the Appalachian Trail, where you turn left to go up another step sloap to a flat clearing in the woods. Turn right at the clearing and you'll see a huge slab of rock in front of you at about 20 yards. After a nice little climb up the wall of the slab you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Virginia Piedmont to the east and the Shenandoah Valley to the west.

Sunset is the best time to experience Spy Rock, followed by sunset. But I guarantee you will never be disappointed with this hike, no matter what time of day (or night) you do it.
