Honda Sensing, a whole new level of safety

You might have heard of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on modern cars, and the new Honda City has such a system as well, the Honda Sensing System. Using a wide-angle camera located in in front of the inside rear-view mirror and using advanced software to analyse the images no matter what the conditions outside, the Honda Sensing keeps the driver in the middle of the lane, following the car behind at a safe distance and even protection from going off the road and collisions. But does it actually work, Automotive Journalist, Kushan Mitra took the new Honda City on the Yamuna Expressway to find out more.

The Honda Sensing consists of multiple features that can be considered ADAS and these are all extremely useful on urban roads and Expressways. India is adding close to 21 kilometers of new Expressways and Highways everyday and while these roads are brilliant, driving on them can be boring and monotonous. In fact, driver distraction and fatigue are leading causes of high-speed accidents in India and across the world. Features on the Honda Sensing such as Lane Keep Assist, which uses the wide-angle camera to monitor the lane markings and keep the car in the middle of the lane as well as Adaptive Cruise Control that takes standard cruise control a step further by maintaining a safe distance from the car ahead of you by adjusting to that cars speed. The Honda Sensing can warns the driver with a loud warning alert as well as a prominent display that they might be departing the edge of the road with road departure warning.

In urban conditions, the Honda Sensing System also has collision warning systems which first warn and then brake the car in case of an imminent forward collision. While several cars nowadays have this 'automatic braking' feature as part of ADAS, the Honda Sensing puts the driver in charge until the last moment before applying the brakes. This can save lives not only of occupants inside the car but also pedestrians and other road users. Low-Speed Follow, which is available on the Honda City e:HEV is another great Honda Sensing feature for high traffic conditions. Have you ever found yourself in a major traffic jam and being distracted by your phone or music and the traffic ahead of you moves off and the people behind you start honking? Not anymore. Low-Speed Follow alerts you to the vehicle in front moving ahead and even follows it at a low-speed. Perfect for bad jams.

The Honda Sensing is a perfect blend of technology, safety while putting the driver first.
