Tearing Cars APART! | Vehicle Extrication Training | Wausau Fire Dept.

One of the most important skills a firefighter has is being able to help a victim in a car accident. In this video we explore the skills and equipment necessary to be able to save a life.

Vehicle extrication is one of the essential functions many fire and rescue departments perform. If they do not, close partnerships and/or automatic aid are used to perform such a task. In Wausau, we have extrication equipment on Engine 2 (Station 2), Engine 3 (Station 3), and the Rescue Truck at Central (Station 1).
The need for extrication has decreased in the past 5-10 years due to the improvement of vehicle technology. Vehicles are now safer due to their construction and features. However, when a significant impact occurs, those safer construction methods may actually slow down access to a patient. Skillful extrication practices are imperative to occupant and rescuer safety. The end goal of extrication is the safe, timely, and efficient removal of a vehicle from around the patient before removing the patient from the vehicle.
