I made this cactus to look like real one thanks to the different direction of satin stitch. Satin Stitch is one of the easiest stitches. There are only 2 floss colors used and I'm really satisfied how it turns out. To make such realistic effect you need to draw the grey lines on the left picture on you fabric. This way it's going to be easier for you to see all the sections for satin stitch. Then follow the stitches directions and fill all the background performing satin stitch. Then add border using stem stitch. The last make cactus spines using cross stitch and straight stitch.
