Otitis Media (middle ear infection) can’t be fully prevented - it often develops after a common flu or cold. But certain factors make some children much more likely to experience repeated ear infections.

Here are the three biggest risk factors:

1. Overcrowding (Daycare & Preschool Exposure)
Children who attend daycare or full-day childcare are exposed to frequent viral infections. In a single room with many children, one child’s flu or sniffles can easily spread to others. Repeated viral infections significantly increase the risk of developing Otitis Media again and again.

2. Passive Smoking
Second-hand smoke from parents or caregivers irritates the nose and Eustachian tube. This makes children more prone to fluid buildup and infection in the middle ear.

3. Pneumococcal Vaccination Status
Pneumococcal vaccination is extremely important. Children who are not vaccinated have a much higher risk of recurrent Otitis Media. The Malaysia Ministry of Health now provides pneumococcal vaccination for free for this very reason.
