Standing Tall, held on Jun 27, 2021 was hosted by ACCA, the Afro Caribbean Canadian Association, to highlight and celebrate Black women in the Greater Hamilton Area.

This project seeks to promote intercultural understanding, self-confidence, pride in culture especially for Black Canadians who have seen little of themselves featured in history textbooks in Canada. In her essay, The Incredible Black Canadian Women You should know" Kathleen Newman-Bremang shares her frustration about the absence of Black women in our history books, "They should be, (Black women) but the truth is, that in many classrooms and publications, they aren’t. Every February, Black women take on the emotional labor of making sure the women who came before us are recognized. The Black women who have shaped this country — and are molding its future — are continually discounted for the stories of problematic old white men…” she writes. This project seeks to develop, preserve, promote, and showcase Black Canadian women in the historical and contemporary.

Since these women are not featured in the history books, we have decided to write our own. Our event consists of a panel discussion on experts in the area in regards to the women being honoured as well as black women power and the importance of our role in shaping society. This event launched our book “Standing Tall… Black Women’s Story of Triumph” which is available on our website.

This year, in our inaugural year we will honor Fleurette Osborne - one of the founding members of the Congress of Black Women of Canada, Chloe Cooley, a runaway slave woman who was instrumental in stopping the slave trade in Canada, Sandi Bell, one of the first Black woman elected to public office in Hamilton, Doreen Johnson, Wilma Morrison, Nerene Virgin, Till Johnson, Eleanor Rodney Evelyn Myrie, Dr. Juliet Daniel, and Beatrice McLean.
