In this week's episode of LIQUOR RUN, Christian and Rolly dive into the REAL James Bond watch - the Rolex Explorer!

Bond has worn a ton of watches over the years, from Rolex to Omega to even Seiko on the odd occasion. He's such an incredible cultural icon at this point that even those among us who aren't watch geeks know that James Bond wears a nice watch. For those who remember the earliest films, they think of the Rolex 6538 Submariner, on an undersized RAF strap, and worn with an ivory dinner jacket. For those whose first Bond was Brosnan or Craig, they immediately jump to Omega. And yet, none of those, or the watches that came in between, are the true BOND watch.

That honor goes to Ian Fleming's personal Rolex Explorer. Fleming was notorious, in writing those novels, for imbuing parts of himself into the character. Whether his taste in clothes, or food, or women, Bond and Fleming were truly one in the same. And yet, somehow, Bond's true watch, the Explorer, hasn't quite reached the levels that, say, the Paul Newman Daytona has reached.

The question this raises, of course, is how much Rolex would actually BE Rolex as we know them today if not for James Bond. The Bond franchise helped to solidify, in the minds of so many young people, that Rolex was THE watch, and that provenance is almost more important than the watch itself.
