A prayer wheel is a cylindrical wheel on a spindle made from metal, wood, stone, leather, or coarse cotton. Maximum possible mantras are written on very thin paper and are wrapped inside the wheel on its spindle. According to the tradition spinning such a wheel will have much the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the mantras.

The practitioner often spins the wheel clockwise which is the same as the direction in which the mantras are written.
