This week is Parliament Week, and I've been answering questions from students across Rugby about how politics actually works.

Jacob from Rugby Free Secondary School asked me a direct question: why aren't we taxing the rich?

The answer is straightforward. We are.

The UK operates a progressive tax system. This means we don't apply the same tax rate to everyone regardless of income. That might sound fair on the surface, but it's not.

A flat rate or poll tax approach hits people on lower incomes far harder. They end up paying a much larger proportion of what they earn compared to those who are better off.

Our progressive system ensures that people with broader shoulders contribute more. Those earning higher incomes pay substantially more in tax. That's not just policy. It's fairness in action.
