Self-described ‘professional Northerner’ Lisa Holdsworth is a screenwriter and Chair of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. In this episode, she speaks about the limited world-view present in the screen industries, and how real action is urgently needed to make the industry a better, more diverse and more inclusive place.

Industry Voices is an impact and research piece from the Screen Industries Growth Network (SIGN), created in collaboration with Candour. In this series, individuals who have experienced discrimination and challenges in the screen industries tell their own stories.

Research demonstrates that groups including Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic people, women, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds are disadvantaged in their careers. Often though, people may overlap two or more of these characteristics, and one of the key themes these research-led films draw out is an intersectional understanding of barriers.

To support change, we must first actively listen to the lived experiences of those who are discriminated against.
