Описание к видео Dinner on the trail: hot-soaking

"Over the Hills" demonstrate hot-soaking home-dehydrated backpacking dinners on the trail.
Assuming you aren't cold-soaking all your meals, the longer your backpack is the more important it is to have an energy-efficient stove. Furthermore, since we only have to boil water, we don't have to worry about clean up. Therefore, we use a Jetboil MiniMo stove (1L capacity). For this particular trip, in Southern California's San Rafael Wilderness, I used a butane-filled isobutane canister. I didn't mean to, it's just what I picked up when we were packing, so it was interesting to see how butane performed on this trip. I usually save the butane-filled canisters for low elevation trips so I need to label them a bit more clearly.
I move fuel between canisters using a G-Works Gas Saver, that's available on Amazon. Despite being an expensive little gizmo to purchase (~$35), it saves you from ending up with lots of half-full canisters. On thru-hikes, like the PCT, it's invaluable because it allows you to reclaim gas from half-full canisters that your fellow hikers have left at resupply points. Lastly, when supplemented with a G-Works butane-to-Lindal valve adapter, you can utilize the Gas Saver to refill isobutane canisters with butane for considerable cost savings, ca. $3 per lb vs. $10 per lb. The cheapest place to purchase 1/2 lb butane canisters seems to be Asian grocery stores.
The butane worked remarkably well on this trip. I only noticed it becoming feeble when we were camping at 6,000', and especially in the morning when the temperature dropped to about 40 degrees F.
Based on this experience I figure that round about 6,000' is the cut-off for using butane. In the high mountains, I'll stick to using isobutane and be more careful to check the canister that I reach for when packing.
