Each year approximately 8,000 to 10,000 babies born in the United States will develop cerebral palsy. The NIH defines cerebral palsy as a neurological disorder that permanently affects a child's muscles, body movements, and physical coordination. It is caused by damage to parts of the baby's brain that control muscle movement, balance, and posture. One of the causes of brain damage, that can result in cerebral palsy, is negligent medical care. Cerebral palsy symptoms generally manifest before the age of three and can include developmental delays in rolling over, sitting, crawling, or walking; lack of muscle coordination in voluntary movements; abnormal muscle tone: too stiff or too floppy. Cerebral palsy is not curable. However, the symptoms are treatable. Which means, the sooner treatment begins, the better a child's chances of overcoming developmental disabilities.
